This ceramic beer cup by contemporary ceramic artist Bin Akiyama combines the traditional craftsmanship of Kasama ware with the unique technique of carbon firing. Kasama ware, originating from Kasama City in Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, known for its creative freedom and innovative spirit. Akiyama builds on this heritage while expressing a bold, modern aesthetic through experimental form and firing.
The piece is created using the carbon firing method, in which the kiln is placed in a strong reduction atmosphere during cooling. This "return reduction" process increases carbon dioxide levels inside the kiln, allowing soot to adhere to the surface. The result is a matte, metallic-like finish with deep, expressive tones.
Inside the cup, fine surface textures help generate a creamy, dense foam—ideal for enjoying beer at its best. For an even more refreshing experience, chill the cup in the freezer before use.
